Port Ellen Distillery History
1825 Established by Alexander Mackay
1836 Sold to John Ramsay
1920 Acquired by Port Ellen Distillery Co. Ltd
1927 Taken over by Distiller Company Ltd (DCL) and subsequently mothballed
1967 Resurrected and renovated by licencees Low Robertson & Co (Edinburgh). Still doubled to four
1973 Large malting facility built opposite the distillery
1983 Distillery mothballed

Port Ellen Distillery Comments
Although the distillery is now silent, the adjacent maltings are still operational and supplying all Islay distilleries, thanks to an official agreement signed to secure employment for the island’s workforce.
One time owner, John Ramsay, was highly instrumental in the development of the first Spirit Safe. He also was the first to realise value of exporting to USA.
