What is a Blended Scotch Whisky?

A blended scotch whisky is defined as Scotch Whisky that is produced both from malt and grain whiskies. It may contain a combination of whiskies from over 40 or 50 different malt and grain distilleries. The ratio of malt to grain can vary, for example 60% grain 40% malt and the higher the malt content, the typically more highly regarded the blend. Each whisky used in the blending process will normally have been matured for about 5 years - the minimum permitted is three years - however there are a number of higher aged blended scotch whiskies available.
